Department of Homeless Services: Atlantic Armory Shelter: Single Men Intake information provided by: LifeNet, a program of the Mental Health Association of New York City

Single homeless men in need of temporary emergency housing should be referred to this facility.  The stay at an Assessment Shelter could be about ninety days.  During the initial or "intake" period the homeless individual receives a comprehensive evaluation, including a medical examination, assistance with entitlements applications, if needed, an employment evaluation and, where applicable, a substance abuse and/or psychiatric evaluation.  Sometimes, as a result of these evaluations, a homeless person may be transferred to a shelter where his/her particular needs will be addressed.  This transfer would take place within a month

I have worked in this field for over 9 years and I have worked with the Bedford and Atlantic Assesment shelter to interview potential residents. The staff there is kind and very helpful and do what they can with very limited resources. With so many clients going in and out and having different mental health and drug issues, of course there is going to be problems, but there is 24 hour DHS Police on site as well as metal detectors to maintain safety. The shelter system in the past has been a bad experience for some, but has come a long way as far as cleanliness and

My bf told me that this place is like HELL and jail. They have no help how can people go to work and not doing anything to help people. This is crazy how are people suppose to step up and become not homeless if you have shelters in ny who dont even care or do anything except hurt the already hurted. -_-

This shelter is a violent drug infested trap staffed by people who either don't care or encourage what Goes on there its better to stay on the street or check into a mental health facility. Dhs needs a lot of work.

I was a resident in BedFord Atlantic Shelter Aka The Castle and Dan and Morina don't know what the hell they are talking about. Yes that place is like hell and most of the staff don't give a hell about you they are there just to collect a paycheck. Most of the Staff member take advantage of their Authority and treat the residents like crap. The first Floor is Clean but mos the 0ther floor all 4 are usually dirty especially the bathrooms
